The most dangerous intersections in Atlanta account for hundreds of crashes every year — and many of them are roads you drive through without a second thought. Here’s what the data says about where collisions happen most often in the city, and what you can do to protect yourself.
Some Atlanta intersections are genuinely more dangerous than others. Here’s what the data says — and what you can do to protect yourself.
Atlanta’s Highway Crash Hotspots
Before getting to intersections, it’s worth noting that some of Atlanta’s most dangerous driving happens on its highways — particularly the Downtown Connector (I-75/I-85) and I-20. Key exits like 10th, 14th, and 17th Streets and Moreland Avenue see frequent, high-speed collisions driven by merging traffic, stop-and-go congestion, and distracted drivers.
But surface streets and intersections present their own serious risks — often because they’re where higher-speed arterials collide with pedestrian traffic and complex turning movements.
The 5 Most Crash-Prone Intersections (2020–2024)
When it comes to the most dangerous intersections in Atlanta, five locations stand out in Georgia DOT data from 2020 to 2024. According to Georgia DOT crash data, the following five intersections recorded the highest number of reported collisions in Atlanta between 2020 and 2024:
1. Northside Drive & Marietta Street — 611 crashes This intersection sits at the junction of two heavily traveled roads near Georgia Tech and major employment centers. High volumes of pedestrian and vehicle traffic, combined with complex turning movements, create frequent conflict points.
2. Piedmont Road & Peachtree Road — 564 crashes One of Buckhead’s busiest corridors, this intersection handles a mix of retail traffic, office workers, and through traffic on two of Atlanta’s most prominent roads. Lane changes and left-turn conflicts are common.
3. Northside Drive & 14th Street — 448 crashes Another Northside Drive hotspot, this intersection is near major medical facilities, apartment complexes, and Midtown’s commercial district. The mix of commuter and local traffic creates frequent rear-end and angle collisions.
4. Boulevard NE & Freedom Parkway — 401 crashes Located in one of Atlanta’s transitional neighborhoods east of downtown, this intersection handles traffic entering and exiting Freedom Parkway with a complicated signal pattern and frequent pedestrian crossings.
5. Ponce de Leon Avenue & Moreland Avenue / Briarcliff Road — 339 crashes Known to locals as a notoriously complex junction, this five-way intersection in Poncey-Highland presents serious visibility challenges and competing turning movements that regularly catch drivers off guard.
What Makes These Intersections So Dangerous?
These locations share several common risk factors:
- Multiple lanes of traffic traveling in multiple directions
- Complex layouts with more than four signal phases or unusual geometry
- Higher posted or observed speeds than typical neighborhood streets
- Mixed-use development bringing pedestrians and cyclists into contact with fast-moving vehicles
- High daily traffic volume that reduces reaction time and forgiveness for driver errors
A Note on the Data

This list reflects total number of crashes — not per-vehicle crash rate. Busier intersections will naturally produce more crashes, even if the per-trip risk at a quieter intersection is similar or higher. A full risk analysis would require traffic volume data and crash severity data together. With that said, total crash volume is still a meaningful indicator of where drivers need to pay extra attention.
Practical Tips: Left Turns and Alternate Routes
Beware of left turns. Left turns at busy intersections are one of the most common sources of serious crashes, particularly when visibility is limited or speeds are higher. Use intersections with dedicated left-turn arrows when possible. Never turn on yellow. Make sure all cross traffic has fully stopped — not just slowed — before you turn.
Consider alternate routes. If you regularly drive through any of Atlanta’s crash hotspots, it may be worth mapping an alternate route that avoids the most dangerous sections, even if it adds a couple of minutes to your commute.
Stay off your phone. Distracted driving is a leading cause of intersection crashes. A split second of inattention approaching a busy intersection can change everything.
